Time Warner CEO, Jeff Bewkes, has promised that their DC comic superhero characters will have “more lightness in them”. Two recently released DC superhero films, Suicide Squad and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, suffered great criticism at the hands of the critics, and this has forced the DC Extended Universe to make their movies in a much lighter tone.

During the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference, Bewkes said, “We’re thinking about that. This is the part where we say ‘pay no attention to the critics’. [But] We do think there’s a little room for improvement.”

DC’s Chief Creative Officer, Geoff Johns was one of Warner Bros executives asked, “to oversee not just the movie applications” but also all the eight DC TV shows and for their consumer product lines. Bewkes said, “We’re going to try to make sure we do this in a way that’s faithful to the opportunity and the tone of this.”

He added, “These movies were very successful in the strategic aims and financial aims we had for them.” He also admitted that these movies were able to reinvigorate the interest of movie lovers in DC characters. “So the strategy worked. The execution did deliver what we wanted. What you shouldn’t take away is that you should be worried about this. We’re actually more optimistic about it than we were….We’re right on course, or better.”

The CEO also defended his recent purchase of 10% stake in Hulu, who are planning to launch a cable-like streaming service in next year. “It fits into a bunch of things that we’ve done. We’re not expecting it to take a lot of cash in the future from us. They do have good plans to get to good profits in a reasonable horizon,” Bewkes said.

He further added that he does not believe that this decision will force subscribers to cut cords from TWC. “The existing distribution world is getting its act together [due to the competitive threat from other providers],” he added. “Different packages with better consumer support. If Comcast and others didn’t do it you know you’d have it from some of the other companies, Roku or Apple, which has been talking about doing that.”

Bewkes also said that, “We’re trying to add distribution choices for consumers, not do something other than that. They want, in most cases, all of our networks.”
