Optimum Online Customers Will Soon Be Able To Stream HBO NOW

Optimum Internet

We have all heard of HBO NOW, which is a standalone streaming service from the famous channel. If you didn’t know they had a service of this sort, then it is a way you could pay for access to the same content as on the TV channel while not having to pay for cable TV.

When it debuted, HBO NOW disappointed many people with the announcement that the service would only be open for streaming on Apple Devices for the first three months. This time window placed Apple as the sole way to watch the channel, other than of course, getting cable.

If you wanted to watch a season of the Game of Thrones series, for example, you would have to own an Apple device or a cable box. No wonder Game of Thrones was one of the most pirated shows of 2014, as was Walking Dead. That alone was reason to wonder why HBO made the exclusive deal.

It seems the channel thinks the same, because they seem about to pull the exclusivity rug from under Apple. Cablevision has just announced that customers of its Optimum Online Internet will be able to access HBO’s streaming service, and that too, very soon.

According to the press release, “Optimum is the first cable provider to partner with HBO to offer the new service, which is expected to launch in April in time for the fifth season of Game of Thrones.”

Optimum Triple Play

Cablevision has not yet mentioned a price, which means there is a chance they will get the option out cheaper than the $14.99 a month that is being offered via the iOS app. It is not hard to picture them bundling HBO NOW into a deal that also has faster internet for customers still on dial up or a slow option.

With April already here, it is going to be interesting to see if there are other ISPs who will bring forth a similar offer in the interim. After Apple’s 3-month window closes, these companies will be under a lot of pressure to try to undercut the $15 price from Apple.

It is more a matter of timing than anything is. Consumers who manage to hold out until the end of these three months may very well end up with a cheaper deal. HBO NOW has only 800,000 subscribers at this time, but getting on Cablevision could kick it off substantially this year.
