With help of a grant, the Worthington town is now finalizing a broadband project that will improve people’s access to the internet. In December 2018, the community of Berkshire County selected Comcast® to take charge of network build project that will bring broadband connectivity to over 96 percent of business and residential premises of the town.

While it may appear hard to believe, people in several communities throughout the Massachusetts state still do not have better access to local high-speed internet service. Worthington, one of its communities that have been looking to enhance broadband access for residents, will fund its project via an array of local and state means.

On December 2018, the Massachusetts Broadband Institute approved a $2.2 million grant to the Philadelphia-based best internet provider to build the local broadband network. The Institute works to expand access to high-speed internet to communities throughout the US state.

Money for it came chiefly from a grant from the state program “Last Mile”, devoted to closing the connectivity gaps in underserved and unserved communities in Western Massachusetts and Central Massachusetts, which will give $2,213,809 to help with Worthington’s network completion.

“The Last Mile program has made great progress in identifying and funding projects that will help close the connectivity gaps in these towns, through public-private partnerships like this, and through the Commonwealth’s support for municipal-owned networks in 20-plus towns,” stated the Massachusetts Governor, Charlie Baker.

“As I’ve met with leaders and residents in unserved towns, it’s clear that closing the broadband gap is a top priority, for homeowners, for parents of school age children, and for citizens who need access to online resources,” said Lieutenant Governor, Karyn Polito.

The Worthington Selectboard Chair, Charley Rose said, “I believe the Town of Worthington is very pleased to have a path forward to bring broadband service to virtually everyone who wants it. This has been a long process and a solution would not have been possible without the combined effort of a large number of people, both in and out of government.”

The senior VP for Western New England Region at Comcast®, Michael Parker said, “Comcast® is honored to partner with the Massachusetts Broadband Institute and the town of Worthington to bring our state-of-the art, fiber-rich network to its residents and businesses. This network expansion will enable broadband speeds up to and including 2 Gigabit per second for residential service and multi-Gigabit speeds for businesses, speeds which are among the fastest and most widely available.”
