Gigabit Internet Service

Comcast Corporation® has announced that they will soon add gigabit internet service with speeds of up to 1 Gbps for both business and residential subscribers in West Michigan. The best internet service from Comcast® would make theirs the fastest in terms of speed and one of the widely accessible ones in the region, said their representatives while making the announcement.

In fact, the gigabit internet is going to be available for customers throughout Comcast’s footprint in West Michigan, which includes Grand Rapids and other Kent County communities, select areas of Ottawa County like Holland, and North Allegan County. The Telco giant’s internet service will make use of DOCSIS 3.1 technology for internet deployment. The technology enables both Comcast Business® subscribers and Xfinity® customers nationwide to get fast internet data over communications line that exists in their office premises and homes.

“We’re delivering gigabit speeds over a network that already passes tens of thousands of homes and businesses across Michigan,” said Tim Collins, Comcast’s Senior VP for Heartland Region. “As consumers and small businesses continue to rely even more heavily on the internet, we have the advanced technology in place to meet this growing demand.”

Talking about the technological investment of Comcast® at Grand Rapids, the City Mayor, Rosalynn Bliss said, “The ability to say 1 gig service is available citywide has tremendous value as we seek to attract residents and businesses to Grand Rapids.”

DOCSIS 3.1 Technology

The new gigabit internet service in West Michigan will complement Comcast Business® Ethernet, which the Telco giant has been upgrading nationwide since its launch in 2011. That multi-gigabit internet service from Comcast® is capable of delivering internet to businesses with up to 100 Gbps speeds over their fiber network.

Comcast’s gigabit internet service in West Michigan, on the other hand, comes at a cost of close to $140 per month for residential customers without a term contract. Further, Comcast® subscribers in the region would require a modem that is compatible with DOCSIS 3.1 technology like the Xfinity® xFi Advanced modem if they need gigabit internet service with top speeds.

Comcast® initially launched gigabit internet service with DOCSIS 3.1 in 2016 in Detroit. The Telco recently revealed their plans to expand the service to southeastern Michigan as well, besides West Michigan later in 2018.
